Efectos económicos de la adulteración monetaria en Bolivia, 1830-1870

Abstract

El gobierno boliviano ordenó la reducción del contenido fino de las monedas de plata de corte menor en 1829 con el propósito de mitigar la escasez de numerario. Esta práctica se prolongó por cuatro décadas y terminó afectando a casi toda la plata que se acuñaba anualmente en la Casa Nacional de Moneda. La interpretación tradicional ha enfatizado los efectos negativos de la adulteración monetaria; sin embargo, integrantes de una nueva corriente historiográfica sostienen que la acuñación de moneda feble protegió la economía regional de la competencia de productos similares procedentes de Europa y estimuló el crecimiento económico, no sólo en Bolivia sino también en el norte argentino y en el sur peruano. En este trabajo examino las hipótesis, evidencias y conclusiones de ambas corrientes historiográficas y sugiero que la expansión económica que experimentaron las economías vecinas a partir de los años cuarenta fue un fenómeno vinculado al comercio con ultramar y que la adulteración monetaria impidió que la economía boliviana tuviera un mejor desempeño en las primeras décadas de la república.
