Impacto de la pandemia del Covid-19 en el uso del dinero en efectivo en el Estado Plurinacional de Bolivia

Abstract

Aun no existe evidencia de que la pandemia del Covid-19 haya generado una reducción sustancial y permanente en el uso del efectivo a nivel mundial. En Bolivia, si bien el confinamiento decretado al inicio de esta se tradujo en un menor uso de efectivo y un mayor uso de medios de pago electrónicos, se observó también un incremento de las salidas de efectivo de bóvedas del Banco Central de Bolivia (BCB), lo que podría evidenciar el fenómeno de la “paradoja del efectivo”. Con el objeto de conocer cómo habrían cambiado las preferencias de la población boliviana en cuanto al uso de diferentes medios de pago producto de la pandemia, se realizó una encuesta a nivel nacional en 2022, cuyos resultados fueron contrastados con los de otra encuesta realizada en un escenario pre-pandemia (2018). Del análisis de los resultados de ambas encuestas, se puede inferir que, si bien la población boliviana utiliza más instrumentos electrónicos de pago para sus transacciones cotidianas que en el pasado, el efectivo continúa predominando.
