Economías de escala y eficiencia en la banca boliviana: el efecto de la especialización del crédito

Abstract

El trabajo determina la existencia de economías de escala, de alcance y el grado de eficiencia de los bancos mediante la estimación de funciones de costo, tomando en cuenta la especialización de los bancos en crédito. Las funciones de costo son estimadas mediante datos de panel usando la metodología de Stochastic Frontier Approach (SFA) para el periodo 1999 -2014. Los resultados muestran que existirían economías de escala en los bancos especializados en microfinanzas en todo el periodo de análisis, hecho que explicaría la capacidad de crecimiento de este sector. En el caso de los bancos comerciales, las economías de escala no siguen un patrón estable en el tiempo, y a partir de 2011 empiezan nuevamente a generar rendimientos crecientes o constantes a escala. Los resultados de eficiencia-X muestran niveles de eficiencia superiores a los reportados en trabajos anteriores. Por último, se analizan potenciales variables que podrían haber afectado esta eficiencia.
