Abstract

The successive enlargement of the European Union has brought together regions with different levels of development. This paper analyzes from a comparative perspective the evolution of GDP per inhabitant and employment rate at European NUTS 2 level. Compared with year 2000, although the disparities between European regions diminished, in 2009 the differences remained significant. This situation exerts a large influence on migration flows, with all consequences on the future economic development in sending and receiving countries.
