Abstract

In designing field experiments in plant breeding and in interpreting the results of these experiments, the following two problems are important: a. to find a suitable criterion for the selection, b. determination of the number of replications needed for a given probability of error. A solution is given for the first problem, in the case that a large number of new varieties are compared with a standard variety with many replications. The solution given minimizes the chance of a wrong selection i.e. the chance of retaining an inferior or rejecting a superior variety. The second problem is discussed in connection with the chance of discarding a good variety when the above mentioned criterion is used.
