Technology‐Driven Talent Management Practices—A Sociotechnical Framework

Abstract

Developments in talent management have been noteworthy, with digitalization creating new avenues for organizational talent management. Despite extensive discussions in both practitioner and academic circles, talent management research has been criticized for lacking a theoretical framework to support these emerging needs. This paper attends to these criticisms by presenting a comprehensive framework to describe technology‐enabled talent management practices. Drawing on the Work System Framework from information systems, we provide a sociotechnical perspective to analyse and explain technology‐enabled talent management. Using an interpretative and constructivist approach of literature review, we build on previous research to develop the technology‐enabled talent management work system framework (TeTMWSF). The TeTMWSF comprises 13 elements categorized as internal, semi‐external and external components. We validated the framework through two rounds of focus group discussions with eight practitioners. The implications of this framework for both research and practice hold significant promise for the future of the field.
