Evolutionary Management: From Theory to Action

Abstract

The concept of evolutionary management suggests that the understanding of the autonomous operating principles of the dynamics of the system can be of interest for the development of organizations and their ability to adapt to unpredictable changes. This paper presents the concept of evolutionary management and discusses how it can be moved from theory to practice by using two systems methodologies: soft systems methodology (SSM) and the viable system model (VSM). The authors provide a conceptual framework and, by means of an application in a real company, exemplify how SSM and the VSM can be used together to enable the practice of evolutionary management and achieve its benefits in practice. As a theoretical outcome of the research work, some principles are formulated for the practice of evolutionary management and illustrated with examples drawn from the application. © 2018 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
