Clarkonomics Comes to the WNBA

Abstract

Objective This study evaluates the effect that Caitlin Clark and other high‐profile rookies such as Angel Reese had on WNBA attendance. Methods This article uses multiple regression specifications of panel data covering the WNBA's 2022–2024 seasons to examine the effect that Clark and other rookies had on WNBA attendance. Results The findings indicate that games involving Clark are responsible for one‐half of the WNBA's league‐wide attendance growth from the 2023 to 2024 seasons. Results for Reese are sensitive to specification, but most models suggest she also had a small positive effect on attendance. Conclusion Caitlin Clark had a transformational effect on fans’ interest in the WNBA, with the league's per‐game attendance in 2024 reaching a level not seen since the league's first three seasons.
