Abstract

A lack of a concordance table between the 1993 version of the South Africa standard industrial classification and the more recent 2017 harmonised system of trade statistics has until now prevented the integration of manufacturing output data, produced by the national statistics authority in South Africa, with trade data captured in the country's customs and excise authorities. The concordance exercise reported on in this article brings together two disparate classifications, making it possible to link industry production data based on an old classification system, with trade data based on a newer and different classification system. The concordance of the old and new classification systems creates the potential for richer insights into the economic activity at industry level in South Africa.
