Abstract

This study aims to explore the intersection between the formal, the informal and the illegal economy from a spatial perspective, arguing that the conjunction of these dimensions has had a substantial impact on the territory, creating large grey areas where local economic relationships are transformed by global market dynamics. Although the phenomenon of informality and its relationship with formality has been widely studied, the present study introduces a third element, allowing the resulting complexity among the three circuits to be examined, and, thereby, enabling the identification of the spatial transformations that take place in Latin American cities.
