Development, contributions and trends in regional studies in Spain: An overview

The aim of this paper is to show the development of regional and urban studies in Spain, pointing out the main factors that have influenced such development, the topics analysed by the Spanish researchers and why Spain has today a remarkable position in the field of regional science. Regional problems have always taken up a very important place among the concerns of the Spanish society. This has been closely linked to longstanding historical and internal political conflicts. But, leaving aside some very interesting contributions and territorial projects developed in the past, the research on regional issues emerged really in the 1960s and the consolidation phase took place from 1975 to 2000, as explained in Sections 2 and 3. From the beginning of this century the field has received a clear thrust, supported by a new generation of economists and geographers. The increasing presence of Spanish researchers in international congresses, workshops and specialized journals enable to state that Spain has reached a similar level as in more advanced countries. Section 4 collects the most outstanding topics and innovative contributions made from 2000 to now. A short final note (section 5) points out some final remarks and why a positive continuity of the progress observed can be expected. El objetivo de este artículo es mostrar el desarrollo de los estudios regionales y urbanos en España, señalando los principales factores que han influido en dicho desarrollo, los temas analizados por los investigadores españoles y por qué España tiene hoy en día una posición destacada en el campo de la ciencia regional. Los problemas regionales han ocupado siempre un lugar muy importante entre las preocupaciones de la sociedad española. Esto ha estado vinculado estrechamente a conflictos históricos y políticos internos de larga data. Sin embargo, dejando de lado algunas contribuciones muy interesantes y proyectos territoriales desarrollados en el pasado, la investigación sobre cuestiones regionales surgió realmente en la década de 1960 y la fase de consolidación tuvo lugar de 1975 a 2000, como se explica en las secciones 2 y 3. Desde principios de este siglo, este campo de estudio ha recibido un claro impulso, apoyado por una nueva generación de economistas y geógrafos. La creciente presencia de investigadores españoles en congresos, talleres y revistas especializadas internacionales permite afirmar que España ha alcanzado un nivel similar al de los países más avanzados. En la sección 4 se recogen los temas más destacados y las contribuciones más innovadoras realizadas desde el año 2000 hasta ahora. En una breve nota final (sección 5) se señalan algunas observaciones finales y se explica por qué cabe esperar una continuidad positiva de los progresos observados. 本稿は、スペインの地域研究及び都市研究の発展を示すものである。その発展に影響を及ぼした主な要因、スペインの研究者が分析の対象としたトピック、今日の地域科学の分野においてスペインが重要な位置にある理由について指摘する。地域に関する問題は常に、スペイン社会の非常に重要な関心事となっている。これは長い歴史における内政対立と強い関連がある。しかし、過去に実施された非常に興味深い研究及び地域研究プロジェクトはさておき、セクション2と3で説明するように、地域問題の研究が本格的に行われるようになったのは1960年代で、1975~2000年はその整理と統合の時代であった。この研究分野は、新しい世代の経済学者及び地理学者の支持を受けて、今世紀の初めから盛んになった。国際会議、ワークショップ、専門誌においてスペインの研究者の存在はますます重要となり、より先進的な国の研究と同じレベルに達したといえる。セクション4では、最も傑出したトピックと、2000年から現在までに行われたイノベーティブな研究を紹介する。セクション5では、簡潔なまとめとして結語と観察された進展の正の連続性が期待できる理由を指摘する。
