The Nordic contribution to regional science: People, principles and empirics

This paper examines the contribution of the Nordic countries to regional science scholarship and practice over the last century. In order to do this we begin by reviewing the contributions of five key scholars whose work has heavily shaped regional science thinking in different ways. In each case the work of each of these scholars was seminal in different ways in different strands of regional science research. Yet, at the same time, one of the issues which arises is that the contribution of these key thinkers has to some extent often been rather overlooked, in some cases for linguistics reasons, but in other cases because of changing research traditions. The more recent contributions of Nordic scholars to regional science research are very varied, but at the same time it is possible to detect a clear focus on issues related to knowledge‐related and innovation‐related topics. The analytical contributions of Nordic regional science research are much bigger than the size of the countries might suggests, but this is not always understood. Moreover, over the years the Nordic regional science community has also played a significant role in regional science institutions and activities, which again is probably more significant than the size of the Nordic countries would suggest. Este artículo examina la contribución de los países nórdicos a la erudición y la práctica de la ciencia regional durante el último siglo. Para ello, este trabajo comienza revisando las contribuciones de cinco académicos clave cuyo trabajo ha moldeado fuertemente el conocimiento de la ciencia regional de diferentes maneras. En cada caso, el trabajo de cada uno de estos académicos fue seminal de diferentes maneras y en diferentes líneas de investigación de la ciencia regional. Sin embargo, y al mismo tiempo, una de las cuestiones que se plantean es que, en cierta medida, la contribución de estos pensadores clave se ha pasado por alto con frecuencia, en algunos casos por razones lingüísticas, pero en otros debido a cambios en las tradiciones de investigación. Las contribuciones más recientes de los académicos nórdicos a la investigación en la ciencia regional son muy variadas, pero al mismo tiempo es posible detectar un claro enfoque en las cuestiones relacionadas con el conocimiento y la innovación. Las contribuciones analíticas de la investigación nórdica de la ciencia regional son mucho mayores de lo que podría sugerir el tamaño de los países, aunque esto no siempre se entiende. Además, a lo largo de los años la comunidad científica nórdica de la ciencia regional también ha desempeñado un papel importante en las instituciones y actividades de la ciencia regional, lo cual, una vez más, es probablemente más significativo de lo que sugeriría el tamaño de los países nórdicos. 本稿では、過去一世紀における地域科学の研究方法および研究実施に対する北欧諸国の貢献を検討する。はじめに、地域科学の思考法を、各々の方法で大きく形作った5人の研究者の功績をレビューする。これらの研究者の功績はいずれも、それぞれの地域科学の分野において、各々のやり方で草分け的なものである。それと同時に、これらの研究者の功績は、ある場合には言語的な理由で、また他の場合には研究の伝統を変えてしまったために、いくらか見落とされがちである、という問題がある。近年の北欧の研究者による地域科学研究は非常に多岐に渡るが、同時に、知識およびイノベーションに関連したトピックに集中していることがはっきりとわかる。北欧の地域科学研究の分析的な貢献は、国の規模から想像されるよりも非常に大きいが、これは必ずしも理解されているわけではない。さらに、北欧の地域科学コミュニティはこの分野の研究施設や研究活動で重要な役割をしており、これもやはり北欧各国の規模から想像されるよりも、はるかに重要であると考えられる。
