Normality in Quality Control Charts

Author

Listed:
  • Peter G. Moore

Abstract

The assumption of normality in the interpretation of quality control charts may be accepted uncritically by some and viewed with scepticism by others. In this article Dr Moore shows how certain departures from normality can affect the probabilities associated with control limits calculated by normal theory. These examples should serve as a warning against the too rigid interpretation of such control limits.
