An Extension of Ehrenberg's Relations between Mean Weights and Heights

Abstract

Ehrenberg originally suggested that the mean heights and weights of groups of children between the ages of 5 and 13 years were related by the equation log w = 0·008h + 0·4, with weight measured in kilograms and height in centimetres. The range of applicability of this was later extended by Kpedekpo down to 1 year and, for boys, up to 16 years. Ehrenberg later suggested an alternative relationship based on the cube root of weight 3√ w = 0·018h + 0·77 which he claimed held for the youngest children. Analysis of seven longitudinal growth studies in infants and pre‐school children shows that modifying each equation by the addition of a negative exponential term will extend its range of applicability down to birth. In the case of both relations the negative exponential term becomes negligible after 18 months, when the original formulation holds.
