The Use of Verbal‐Call Systems to Call Patients from Waiting Areas to Consulting Rooms

Abstract

Formal calling arrangements are an essential part of appointment systems. This paper discusses the application of a particular type of direct calling, a verbal‐call system, with particular reference to group practices, health centres, etc. Numerical results are obtained for the congestion of a simplified model of the system by analogy with machine interference problems. Simulation results for a more realistic model are compared with these analytic results. Tables of the average number of machines operating AN are given for M/Em/1//N for N = 2 (1) 10 and m = 1, 4, 7, 10, ∞. Equilibrium results are given for M/M/1//N, N = 2 (1) 10, both by regarding arbitrary time points and by imbedding at arrival instants.
