Combining Two‐Tailed Rank‐Correlation Statistics

Abstract

When one judge gives an ordered series of responses to an ordered set of N stimuli, the significance of the correlation between stimulus and response is often assessed by means of Spearman's rank correlation coefficient. The question studied here is whether the responses of J judges are correlated with the stimuli, in circumstances where some judges respond positively to increasing amounts of the stimulus, while others respond negatively: that is, taking into account the magnitudes, but not the signs, of individual judges' correlations. A statistic based on the values of Spearman's rank correlation statistic calculated between the stimuli and the response of each judge individually is proposed and critical values are tabulated for small J, N. For other J, N a Normal approximation is shown to be adequate.
