Automating Damped Least Squares to Solve the Equations Determining Refractive Index of Crystals

Abstract

The determination of the complex refractive index n – ik of crystal material from measured transmission | T | and reflection | R | is of real interest in physical optics, and involves the solution of two highly non‐linear simultaneous equations. A means is outlined by which the method of ‘damped’ least squares may be made fully automatic, and which has yielded the (multiple) solutions of these equations to fine accuracy in a very short time on a digital computer.
