Abstract

The long‐awaited digital‐images and multimedia guidelines were released for use in December 1996, and their crafters encouraged use and evaluation during a trial period. This article explores the question of images of art traditionally employed and collected by educators and libraries within the context of copyright to demonstrate some of the difficulties that will be encountered by individuals and institutions trying to apply the guidelines as written. To illustrate the procedure, this article analyzes the process of obtaining permissions for reuse of images from the University of Oregon's Image Reserve and identifies issues requiring further study.
