Abstract

This paper sets the ERIC information system in the context of the more general characteristics and problems of social science information storage and retrieval. Social science information studies and attempts at organizing social science information are surveyed. The Educational Resource Information Center system is summarized, and the criticisms of that system in terms of decentralization, information quality, and indexing vocabulary and thesaurus structure are presented. The recommendations of the Fry study are considered in the context of the whole problem of social science information handling.
