Labor's Influence on the Balance of the U.S.A.'s Merchandise Accounts

Abstract

The results found here indicate that American labor does influence importantly the level of imports and exports of manufactures in the United States. In particular, imports tend to be lower and exports tend to be higher in those industries in which higher skilled American workers are used more abundantly. Moreover, labor efficiency and productivity also influence inversely the level of imports and directly the level of exports.
