Problems in the conversion of bibliographical data—A keypunching experiment

Abstract

A keypunching test project is described in which the data from 2,600 library cards were converted to machine‐readable form (including 908 verified). The test was run as a normal keypunching situation using 12 keypunchers at a service bureau. Card catalog data was converted as found in a typical catalog. All types of data, including foreign language material, were converted, except those characters not of a Roman alphabet. The problems encountered during the test and the solutions for some of them are included. In addition, the system devised for the computer manipulation of the data is outlined. Statistics, including costs, are given.
