Machine compilation and editing of printed alphabetical subject indexes

Abstract

By defining and isolating certain generic relationships between index terms as invariably valid for all documents in a collection, the items under such “formally related” terms may be manipulated to produce automatically printed alphabetical subject indexes, tailor‐made for the volume of information they contain. The technique rapidly generates single‐issue and cumulative subject indexes having approximately constant “optimum” average numbers of items under given terms. A cross reference structure is produced automatically and individually for each index. Some implications of the technique for cooperative indexing are discussed.
