Requirements for a scientific mission‐oriented information center

Author

Abstract

Planning for a mission‐oriented information center requires determination by the interested scientific group of: the subject area to be covered; the type and number of persons to be served; the kind of services desired, i.e., parameters of the customer's need, form of copy desired (original article, microform, abstract), how frequently services are desired; the extent of coverage in estimated number of articles; and what professional and financial support can be counted on. As a method of obtaining many of the answers, the interested group can provide B A I T as background information (Bibliography, Abstracts, Indexes, and Translation), using several of the newer techniques. For example, in preparing indexes, key‐word techniques should be used, and a citation index should be prepared in the crucial subject area.
