Ideological Conceptions of the Basis for the Sexual Division of Labor

Abstract

. The theoretical problem of the sexual division of labor approached through a comparative critique of Marx and Engels on the one hand and Becker on the other. Though fundamentally different in their methodologies, analyses, and intentions, both theories face similar problems that ultimately limit them as adequate explanations of the sexual division of labor and as foundations for social policy prescriptions. More specifically, both theories are plagued with problems of circularity, reductionism, economic functionalism, and most importantly naturalism. The identification of these problems in turn results in the conclusion that the complex phenomenon of the sexual division of labor cannot be explained in strictly economic terms and that we need a multidisciplinary framework to analyze this topic.
