Abstract

Elaeocarpus zeus MRDA was described and illustrated (Fig-1) as a new species from the district of Bogura, Latitude: 24.843559, Longitude: 89.370108, Bangladesh. It belongs to the Rudraksha family Elaeocarpaceae. However, the Rudraksha fruit is a blue marble and rounded seed-shell/stone. This new species is deeply sculpted stone similar to Rudraksha seed. But not round shaped. It was lance-shaped with pointed tips. Elaeocarpus obtusus Blume has round but pointed fruits and obtuse to broadly rounded apex leaves. There is no information that Elaeocarpus obtusus Blume found in Bangladesh. Both species compare in Table-1. The ellipsoid fruit pointed at apex and sweet in taste. Not sour like other Elaeocarpus species like E. serratus, E. floribundus and others found in Bangladesh. This medium tree has buttressed roots and new shoots from bottom of tree trunk. Leaves are quite similar to Elaeocarpus obtusus Blume, small and round leaves.
