Exploring Livelihood Diversification among Tribal Women in India: A Pathway to Empowerment

This study focuses on the empowerment of tribal women in India through diversifying their livelihoods, as there is marginalization which is caused by socioeconomic and cultural barriers. This study seeks to understand how tribal women economic position and general welfare can be improved by looking at various sources of income other than the traditional subsistence activities. The study employs a two-fold approach that involves the combination of quantitative survey with qualitative interviews in different tribal societies in India. The findings indicate that the diversification of sources of income significantly increases the financial independence, decision making of tribal women, and their social status. However, there are still barriers like limited education, credit and market distribution which remain quite significant. In the study, particular policy actions are highlighted in order to help tribal women in education, skill development and improved market relations to maximise the benefits of diversifying their livelihoods as a form of empowerment. This study contributes to the broader debate around gender equalities and sustainable development in underserved communities.
