Integrated Waste Management: Challenges and Opportunities for a Sustainable Future

Although multiple studies and examinations have investigated the origins and nature of wastes, as well as the potential harmful impacts of improper management and leading global practices, uncertainty still remains regarding what precisely defines waste. How much do we truly understand about what should be classified as waste, and what are the historical backgrounds of waste management? This paper seeks to address these crucial questions by drawing on insights from previous research. A desktop research method was employed, using a descriptive approach to gather data from peer-reviewed sources such as journal publications, environmental organization reports, and books. Findings reveal that the concept of waste is largely subjective a material is only considered waste when the possessor labels it as such. This is particularly significant because one person may view a material as waste, while another may regard the same material as a valuable resource. Therefore, it is argued that there is a pressing need to clearly define what constitutes waste, as this forms the basis for effective regulation.
