Abstract

Chitosan (CS)-based antibacterial hydrogels, often enhanced with inorganic nanoparticles, antibacterial agents, or CS derivatives, are gaining attention for their potential in wound healing, drug delivery, and environmental cleanup. These materials offer excellent biocompatibility, improved antibacterial efficacy, and controlled release capabilities. Research has shown that CS composites with metal oxides such as SnO₂, CuO, Ag, NiO, MgO, and Fe₃O₄ exhibit enhanced antibacterial, antifungal, photocatalytic, and adsorption properties. However, challenges like solubility issues and potential toxicity need to be addressed. Ongoing research is focused on optimizing these composites to improve both performance and safety for biomedical and environmental applications.
