Effects of Vestibular Physiotherapy Protocol on Children with Developmental Coordination Disorder in the Prevention of Fall

Abstract

Background: Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD) is a disorder in which motor coordination is impaired substantially and also affects the Activities of Daily Life (ADL) and academic performances as defined in the diagnostic and statistical manual of the mental disorder 4th edition (DSM IV). Developmental coordination disorder is more common in boys than girls. 73% to 87% of developmental coordination disorder children have difficulty in maintaining posture. Vestibular rehabilitation therapy is the accountable for balance maintenance and stability. Objective: To find out the effectiveness of vestibular rehabilitation therapy on children with developmental coordination disorder in the prevention of falls. Methodology: A quasi- experimental study was done in pre and post test type on 30 samples with age group of 8– 13 years children with Developmental coordination disorder for the duration of six weeks. The vestibular rehabilitation therapy was used as the intervention for the improvement of balance and the prevention of falls. Outcome Measures: DCDQ’ 07 Questionnaire, Timed Up and Go Test (TUGT) and Pediatric Balance Scale (PBS).
