Abstract

This study explores the lived experiences of para-athletes in competitive sports, focusing on their challenges, coping strategies, support systems, and overall well-being. Using a descriptive qualitative research design, six para-athletes from a Special Education (SPED) school in the 1st District of Capiz were purposively selected. Participants varied in age, years of experience, and level of competition, including regional and national events. Data were gathered through semi-structured interviews and analyzed using thematic analysis. Findings revealed that para-athletes encounter significant challenges such as bullying, physical injuries, emotional stress, and academic-sport balance. Despite these barriers, participants reported strong motivation, personal growth, and a sense of fulfillment through sports participation. Support systems involving parents, teachers, and coaches were found to be critical in enhancing confidence and resilience. Participation also contributed to improved emotional well-being and provided opportunities such as financial incentives and travel experiences.
