This article examines the 3 January 2026 U.S. operation in Caracas—Operation Absolute Resolve—and argues that the episode exposes a fundamental contradiction at the heart of contemporary international law. While Article 2(1) of the UN Charter proclaims the sovereign equality of states, the unilateral capture and extrajudicial transfer of a sitting head of state reveal how power politics can hollow out legal norms.
