Factores de microestructura del mercado en la determinación del precio del petróleo

Abstract

El 20 de abril de 2020, el precio del futuro sobre el petróleo West Texas Intermediate (WTI) con entrega en mayo cotizó en negativo por primera vez en la historia. Otros precios de crudo también registraron valores muy bajos, y su volatilidad se disparó y se situó muy por encima de la de los mercados bursátiles. Este artículo analiza las diferencias entre el mercado al contado y el mercado de futuros del crudo, mostrando el papel fundamental que estos desempeñaron en el origen y la posterior corrección de este evento, que afectó a los contratos suscritos sobre el WTI en mayor medida que al Brent. El artículo también destaca la presencia, cada vez más relevante, de los fondos cotizados sobre petróleo y su creciente uso como instrumento de inversión minorista.
