Acuerdo sobre un nuevo régimen para el Reino Unido en la Unión Europea

Abstract

Este trabajo describe el contenido del acuerdo alcanzado el pasado 19 de febrero de 2016 por los jefes de Estado o de Gobierno de los 28 Estados miembros de la Unión Europea (UE), por el que se refuerza el estatus especial del Reino Unido en la UE. Se trata de un acuerdo de gran trascendencia política e institucional con el que se pretende dar respuesta a las preocupaciones planteadas por el primer ministro británico, David Cameron, en relación con cuatro áreas específicas (gobernanza económica, competitividad, soberanía y prestaciones sociales y libre circulación) y, en última instancia, evitar la salida del Reino Unido de la UE. El acuerdo contiene principalmente «clarificaciones» de los jefes de Estado o de Gobierno, pero también compromisos concretos en las cuatro áreas mencionadas. Las disposiciones del acuerdo solo entrarán en vigor si el resultado del referéndum del Reino Unido que se celebrará el 23 de junio de 2016 es favorable a la permanencia en la UE.
