Abstract

Global competitiveness strategy based on science-technology-innovation has a very important place in terms of the high welfare of the society with sustainable competitive power for companies and sustainable economic growth for countries. The most important factor in the economic development of developed countries is the production of new technologies, the application of technological developments to the industry and the marketing of these developments to other countries. Two criteria that can be used as an indicator of this technological development are the number of R&D expenditures or patent applications. The aim of this study is to reveal the effects of university-industry collaboration in R&D on patent applications with 2019 data and statistical methods for 108 countries. It has been determined that there is a significant difference in the number of patent applications for country groups with low-high and medium-high level university-industry cooperation as R&D. On the other hand, for patent applications, there was no significant difference in R&D between groups with low-medium level university-industry cooperation. According to the research findings, it was concluded that high-level university-industry cooperation in R&D is one of the most important factors affecting patentable products and services, and therefore the public and private sector should increase cooperation in R&D more efficiently in order to achieve sustainable growth.
