The Observation of the Human Being Dignity, as Mirrored in Conventions, Treaties and Other International Documents

Abstract

This article presents the evolution of the concept of human dignity in conventions, treaties and other in ternational documents, starting from the 13 th century, when we meet different references to the human rights in the English Charter from 1215 –Magna Charta, and continuing with th e American Declaration of Independence from 1776, the French Declaration of the Ri ghts of Man and of the Citizen from 1789 etc. In present times, the most important and relevant documents are The Charter of the United Nations, signed at San Fr ancisco, California, on the 26 th of June 1945, The European Convention of Human Rights, signed at Rome, on the 5 th of November 1950, the United Nations Declaration on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination, adopted in 1963, The Charte r of Paris, called “For a new Europe” – 1989, The Inter-American Convention on Huma n Rights, signed at San José, in Costa Rica, on the 22 nd of November 1969, The African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights, adopted during the Conference for Organisation of African Unity (OAU), on the 27 th of June 1981, The Asian Human Rights Charter, elaborated by the Asian Human Rights Commission and proclaimed on the 17th of May 1998 etc.
