Abstract

The European Union (EU) has attempted to create a harmonised legal system in the area of data protection that aims to cover all the EU Member States. This paper aims to examine the interaction between society, technology and related law, and to explore whether it is practical to consider the EU as a single society under technological developments, and as an example, in data protection law. In spite of the diversity of EU Member States, this paper seeks to discover the socio-legal and socio-technical realities that influenced the harmonised approach in the EU.
