The Organisation of Viewing in Contemporary Art Exhibition Spaces in Edinburgh

Abstract

This research project critically examines the complex organization of viewing activities within contemporary art exhibition spaces in Edinburgh, aiming to provide a deeper understanding of visitor engagement. Specifically, it focuses on how the architectural exhibition structure, the deductive interpretive skills of the visitors, and the physical co-presence of other audience members jointly shape the audience's spatial movement, sustained attention, and ultimate viewing decisions. Although existing academic literature has frequently discussed these influential factors in isolation, this project introduces a novel approach by considering how they operate simultaneously within the exact same observation timeframe. Methodologically speaking, the study employs a robust qualitative framework that combines direct field observation, detailed field notes, unobtrusive video recording, and comparative case studies conducted across multiple prominent contemporary art exhibition spaces in Edinburgh. By meticulously analyzing nuanced micro-actions-such as pausing, skipping specific artworks, reading curatorial labels, waiting in line, giving way to others, and looking back at previously viewed pieces-this project systematically studies how the dynamic interaction of physical space, curatorial text, and human co-existence actively produces modern spectatorship. The expected contribution of this research is the development of a comprehensive, multi-dimensional framework for understanding the exhibition viewing experience not merely as a passive visual reception, but as an active, embodied, and highly relational practice that redefines the boundaries of contemporary art consumption.
