The Underlying Mechanism Linking AI Awareness to Task Crafting

Abstract

With the widespread adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies in the workplace, employees' perceptions of future job uncertainty-termed AI awareness-have emerged as a critical factor influencing organizational behavior. While prior research has predominantly emphasized the negative consequences of AI awareness, recent perspectives highlight its potential positive effects. This study explores the mechanisms through which AI awareness impacts employee task crafting, considering the enhancement opportunities brought by AI integration. Drawing on a three-wave longitudinal survey of 456 employees from digitally transforming enterprises in Nanjing, the results demonstrate that AI awareness positively and significantly predicts task crafting behaviors (β = 0.473, p < 0.01). Specifically, when faced with AI-induced occupational uncertainty, employees actively engage in task crafting-such as adjusting task boundaries and optimizing work processes-to alleviate anxiety and potentially boost innovative performance. These findings provide practical insights for organizations aiming to optimize task design and foster effective human-machine collaboration in the context of digital transformation.
