The Impact of Pension Finance and the Internet Environment on Elderly Consumption

Abstract

As population aging intensifies, the impact of pension finance and the internet environment on elderly consumption has become a critical issue. Using 2022 China Family Panel Studies (CFPS) data and a fixed-effects model, this study empirically analyzes the effect of pension finance on elderly consumption and examines the moderating role of the internet environment. Findings indicate that pension finance significantly promotes elderly consumption, with internet usage level exerting a positive moderating effect. This effect exhibits pronounced group heterogeneity. Heterogeneity analysis reveals that agricultural household registration and employed seniors exhibit greater sensitivity. Mechanism tests indicate that pension finance indirectly drives consumption growth by increasing income and enhancing financial investment returns. This study provides a mechanism-based explanation for the consumption suppression phenomenon in the "silver economy" and offers policy implications for advancing pension finance innovation and digital age-friendly adaptations.
