Abstract

Process of globalization considerably increased the demand for maritime transport of inputs and outputs, and created a stronger competition which offers these services. Therefore, the development of individual ports depends on their competitiveness, i.e. on the quality of services they offer. It is necessary to have rational management of port services compatible with the level at which the competitiveness is defined: competitiveness within a port, competitiveness among different ports, competitiveness among ports of the same gravitation area and competitiveness among ports in terms of the market they operate in. Quality of port services, satisfaction of clients and competitiveness of port depend on the following groups of factors: transport policy and regulation, economic circumstances, education, technology, safety, energy and environment. Quality of port services and competitiveness of port have a key role in the process of port development regardless of the port features.
