Rekenschap op zijn kop: prestatiemanagement als performatieve en ethische praktijk

Abstract

Dit artikel1 laat zien dat er naast functionaliteit ook performativiteit van prestatiemanagement is. Performativiteit is de kracht van theorieën, theoretische raamwerken (zoals die voor prestatiemanagement) en ook van cijfers om in een relationeel verband te participeren in de totstandkoming van een organisatiewerkelijkheid. Terwijl functionaliteit gepaard gaat met ordelijkheid en doelgerichtheid, gaat performativiteit gepaard met dynamiek, met ongerichtheid en onvoorspelbaarheid. In een relationeel verband wordt prestatiemanagement gezien als een praktijk die wordt gedragen door mensen en dingen, die tegelijkertijd door die praktijk worden ge(her)positioneerd. Omdat de praktijk van prestatiemanagement zowel insluit als uitsluit, is zij inherent ethisch.
