Trade-Offs Between Cherry Production and Endemism Conservation in Serra da Gardunha, Portugal

Abstract

A produção de cereja na encosta norte da Serra da Gardunha (Beira Interior, Portugal) está a aumentar, criando uma ameaça ao endemismo Asphodelus bento-rainhae. O objectivo deste estudo é descobrir o trade-off entre a produção de cereja e a percentagem de área coberta por A. bento-rainhae em cada parcela de terreno. Para tal, foram recolhidos dados sobre a produção de cereja no município do Fundão. Os dados foram modelados com análise de clusters, regressão linear múltipla e redes neuronais artificiais para identificar as variáveis ambientais e de gestão que influenciam quer a produção de cereja, quer a presença de A. bento-rainhae. O método de remoção da vegetação nos taludes entre terraços destacou-se das demais variáveis, estando associado a um aumento da presença de A. bento- rainhae, acompanhado por uma ligeira diminuição na produção de cereja. As restantes variáveis ambientais e de gestão não apresentaram efeitos significativos comuns sobre a produção de cereja e a distribuição do A. bento-rainhae. Os resultados sugerem que é possível aumentar a produção de cereja sem diminuir a presença do endemismo se a gestão for realizada sem herbicidas.
