Abstract

Uma das discussões interessantes da literatura económica recente prende-se com o papel da investigação desenvolvida nas universidades e dos seus spillovers como estímulos ao desenvolvimento regional. No entanto, os mecanismos exactos que ligam o investimento em educação e o desempenho das diferentes regiões permanecem desconhecidos. Este trabalho propõe-se testar a existência de externalidades positivas da localização das universidades, bem como da natureza e da qualidade da investigação por elas desenvolvida. Em particular, consideramos (e testamos) o diferente impacto da investigação nas ciências sociais – que apresentam um carácter predominantemente tácito – e da investigação nas ciências naturais, esta com uma natureza mais codificada. O indicador utilizadocomo medida do desempenho das empresas é a produtividade do factor trabalho, medida pelo rácio entre o Valor Acrescentado Bruto e o número de trabalhadores.
