Abstract

International testing of learning achievements of students by programmes PISA and TIMMS is considered, including both organizing and ideological aspects. The sociological character of such researches is emphasized. The results obtained can be used for analysis of national educational programmes and methods as well as factors which influence on efficiency of pedagogical process. Much less important are country ratings based on testing results which are most popular in media. Some criticism is given to the conclusion about low quality of school education in Russia made on the base of a limited success of Russian students participated in PISA testing. This criticism is extended to the conceptual basis of the PISA approach itself.
