Abstract

The Article presents and briefly discusses six stages in the development of the U.S. university system – from the long and sluggish period of semi-medieval colonial colleges of New England to the present-day postmodern age of increasingly commercialized universities which are actively involved in the process of the scientific knowledge production, technology transfer, and profit sharing. The emphasis is made upon the current period which is characterized by the increasing commercialization and industrialization (K&I) of the classic American University. Effects are mixed: The K&I trend may bring about short-term gains for the industry and some fast-developing sectors of university research such as biotechnology but contribute to the long-term decline of the university system as a whole.
