Abstract

This article aims to demonstrate how the Ilha das Enxadas was integrated into the port operation of Rio de Janeiro during the 19th century by the Lage family. To do so, we will briefly explain how this island was established and adapted to the port operation in the Court of the Empire, in a pre-capitalist logic and with the prevalence of trapiches. We will also seek to critically clarify the business history of the Lage family, especially the Comendador Antônio Martins Lage, explaining how the productive domain of that island was carried out by these merchants, transforming it into an important productive unit of the port operation in Rio de Janeiro.
