La excepcionalidad chilena: el comercio transatlántico de Chile en el contexto sudamericano durante la post Independencia (1812-1848)

Abstract

La post-independencia de América Latina ha sido descrita por una parte de la literatura como 'décadas perdidas' debido a crisis institucionales que impidieron aprovechar los beneficios del libre comercio. Chile sorteó este periodo con más éxito, pero hasta el momento la evaluación de su desempeño comercial se ha basado en tendencias generales que no consideran adecuadamente el extendido contrabando de la época. Una nueva estimación del valor del comercio transatlántico de Chile y sus vecinos, utilizando estadísticas de sus socios comerciales, reafirma la excepcionalidad del comercio chileno. Chile sostuvo un comercio más valioso y sostenido que sus vecinos gracias a su adaptabilidad, exportando metales de producción doméstica junto a un considerable comercio de reexportación.
