Nonmetro/Metro Children: Similar Families, Different Economic Conditions

Abstract

The structure of American families has changed significantly in the past 25-30 years. More children today, for example, will live in a single-parent family at some point in their lives, and more mothers, including those with young children, are now employed outside the home. Such changes have altered the typical family experience for many children and have raised concern about the effects of these new family circumstances on children's well-being and development.
