Balanced Growth Strategies Explored

Abstract

Excerpts from the article: During the 1970's, the rural areas of the United States experienced more rapid growth in population, income, and employment than did urban areas. From a rural viewpoint, this was a pleasant change from the experience of earlier years. Research by USDA rural development economists has looked at factors affecting growth—factors that need to be understood whether the aim of local leaders is to limit a boom or to encourage development. The factors are: increasing the availability of resources, expanding markets for local products, advancing technology, conquering geographic space, and building institutions. Action by local leaders can influence each factor.
