Abstract

The Barahona coffee origin denomination (Dominican Republic) is produces in Pedernales, Barahona, Idependencia and Bahoruco province between altitiudes 500-1,500 metres. The aim of the work was to characterize the technological level of the Barahona coffee farms to improve market position. By a panel discussion the technological variables were defined between the items to be explained, farm profitability as indicator of the technological level, and the explanatory variable was calculated by means of a chi-squared test of significance between the items. Two clusters were obtained, i) low technological level coffee growers and ii) medium technological coffee growers oriented to the market. The results showed the technological divide in developing countries. The difference between the coffees of Barahona commercialized could affect the consumers trust and damage the image of all the coffee growers. It is needed uniformity in the coffee offer to improve its market position and to impede other coffees to be sold under this label.
